In my recent work I have been exploring architectural
themes and the
physical and metaphysical relationship we have to our built environment.
I
see buildings as an extension of the body. The body being the
first place
of shelter, second is the earth and architectural structures the
third. All
of my paintings have reoccurring physical structures--bridges,
portals,
water towers and archways--revealing both the permanence of architecture
as
well as its consistent status as being in flux, always open and
vulnerable
to all possibilities. Like an individual's identity, architecture
captures
something universal and eternal yet must withstand the ever-changing
nature
of the world. I invite the viewer to enter my paintings as one
would enter
a building and locate a personal and subjective experience of
one's own.
My artwork is influenced by a myriad of artistic styles and cultures.
I am
attracted to the active and gestural style of the New York School
of
Abstract Expressionists and the figural composition and boldly
developed
color fields of the San Francisco/Bay Area Figurative painters
of the 1960s.
Not limited to modernist American influence, I look to the ancient
past
for inspiration, specifically, the fluid line and richly imbued
colors found
in Mayan artwork.
I also allow myself to be influenced and inspired by my medium.
Water is a
permanent and vital element in all my work. I use water both metaphorically
and physically as part of the artistic process. I use water as
if it were
pigment--I paint with it, manipulate it, and capture its elusiveness
with
the speed and deftness demanded of the element.
